The Biggest Movies Still to Come in 2024
We're almost halfway through 2024, but this year is already shaping up to be one for the movie history books. From long-awaited blockbuster sequels to bold original visions, the back half of the year has an explosive lineup that will surely get cinephiles buzzing.
Let's look at some of the biggest and most anticipated films hitting theatres in the coming months.
Strap in for Maximum Madness with Furiosa (May 24)
First up is Furiosa, the epic prequel/spin-off to George Miller's 2015 masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road. While the incomparable Charlize Theron won't be reprising her iconic role, the baton has been passed to the immensely talented Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit, Last Night in Soho) as the younger Furiosa. Very little is known about the plot, but you can expect this gritty origins tale to deliver the same visually dazzling, bone-crunching action set pieces and richly crafted post-apocalyptic world that made Fury Road an instant classic. We'll finally learn what forged Furiosa into the badass rebel warrior we met years ago in the Wasteland.
The Clown Princes (and Princess) of Crime Return in Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4)
After setting box office records and earning Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for his unhinged portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime in 2019's Joker, director Todd Phillips is bringing the character back for more mind-bending mayhem. Joker: Folie à Deux (translated as the "madness of two") will be a fascinating genre mashup - a dark psychological thriller AND a musical. Yes, you read that right.
Phillips has assembled a killer crew for this ambitious project, including pop icon Lady Gaga making her first major acting turn in ages as Harley Quinn, the unhinged partner-in-crime to Phoenix's Joker. It remains to be seen how the deranged musical numbers will blend with the gritty Gotham underbelly, but this unique creative risk has us intrigued.
The Merc with a Mouth Joins the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse in Deadpool 3
Speaking of long-awaited returns, the delightfully crass and meta "Merc with a Mouth" Deadpool is finally being integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Ryan Reynolds is back as the wisecracking anti-hero, and to make things even more bodacious, Hugh Jackman will be suiting up as Wolverine one more time.
Plot details are being kept under hilariously tight wraps. Still, you can count on an absolute demolition of the fourth wall, insane stunts, and enough inappropriate humour to make a sailor blush. Shawn Levy, hot off the blockbuster success of Free Guy and The Adam Project, is directing what's sure to be an anarchic romp through the multiversal madness Marvel has unleashed.
A Haunting Batch of Horror Highlights
Horror fans have plenty of shudder-inducing titles to look forward to as well. Ti West's X trilogy, which kicked off in 2022 with the retro slasher X, will conclude with the Tinseltown-set MaXXXine in July. The delightfully demented Terrifier series ramps up the absurd, over-the-top kills with Terrifier 3 in October. And for those who had nightmares from Smile's haunting grin last year, the trauma continues with Smile 2 just before Halloween.
Sci-Fi, Animation, and More to Blast Your Senses
Looking for something a bit...lighter? No need to fret. Disney is bringing the animated hit Moana back to theatres with Moana 2 in late November, sure to deliver another round of epic ocean voyages and dazzling visuals. Director Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell will try to capture the intense adrenaline and spectacle of storm chasing with Twisters in July. And for those craving both star power and gravitas, Ridley Scott has assembled an all-star cast including Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Barry Keoghan for the long-awaited Gladiator sequel coming in November.
Other Major Releases
Alien: Romulus is a prequel film set in the Alien universe, though not many verified details are known beyond the title. It's mentioned as one of the major 2024 releases to look out for.
Borderlands: A live-action adaptation of the popular Borderlands video game series starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and others. Described as a raunchy sci-fi comedy adventure.
So buckle up and get those ticket pre-orders ready—the rest of 2024 is an embarrassment of cinematic riches with a larger-than-life theatrical experience for everyone.
Whether you crave bone-crushing action, mind-bending psychological twists, side-splitting comedy, or good old-fashioned popcorn entertainment, this incredible lineup of films will blow audiences away and make this year one for the history books. The movies are back, baby!
